A splendid Jodhpur exhibition, "Peacock in the Desert, The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India" will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (4 March to 12 August 2018), before travelling to Seattle and Toronto. Visit if you can, it's beautiful.
A spectacular new two-volume book by the well-known scholar Dr. Robert Elgood offers a window into the vivid history and martial culture of the royal Rathore rulers of Jodhpur. The fascinating text is complemented by photographs of more than 400 arms in the Mehrangarh Fort collections, dazzling with sophisticated and often charming designs, crafted with gold, silver, jewels, ivory, jade, enamel, and watered steel.
In addition to the Mehrangarh Museum Shop and the Palki Shop, visitors to the Fort in the coming season will be able to enjoy a new shopping experience, at the MEHRAN BAZAAR, opposite the MEHRAN CAFE. New and fun product lines (hints: Desert Gypsies, Jodhpur Blues), brought to Jodhpur from designers and craftspersons throughout India. Watch for it! And while you're there, stop in at the Mehran Cafe.
The Mehrangarh Museum Shop, along with The Palace Collection Jodhpur, participated in this three-day event at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, featuring heritage products from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. We were given a prominent place on the grounds, and our two beautiful Royal Jodhpur Tents, enclosing our product displays, set us off from the stalls of all the other participants.
On 11 April 2014 Mehrangarh Fort was the venue for the introduction of VAARA, a new scent by the legendary British fragrance house Penhaligon's, inspired by the palace, fort, desert and gardens of Jodhpur, and named after Maharaja Gaj Singh's granddaughter. The glittering function was attended by fashion and fragrance journalists from around the world, with a good sprinkling of celebrities and royalty. VAARA has gone on to become one of Penhaligon's most treasured fragrance lines. See their website, www.penhaligons.com, for the full story.
was an amazing exhibition of 17th-19th century paintings from the Royal Jodhpur ateliers that opened at the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 2008, then travelled to the Seattle Art Museum, the British Museum, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It attracted dazzling reviews throughout the journey; excerpts below are from a review by Laura Cumming in The Observer, 21 May 2009:
"The most intoxicating show of the year so far has just opened at the British Museum.
Everything in it is a revelation...All your expectations of Indian miniatures are overturned from
the start...Garden and Cosmos begins on Earth and eventually rises to the star-spangled
heavens. The first half represents the worldly paradise of three maharajahs...the second half
reaches far out into the soul of the universe."
The exclusive products inspired by these extraordinary paintings continue to be among the most popular
treasures in the Mehrangarh Museum Shop.
In 2007, TIME magazine included the Fort in their Best of Asia issue
Mehrangarh Fort
Jodhpur, India
"The Shop, featuring porcelain,
scarves, books and games, could be an annex to New York City's Museum of Modern Art"
But our most treasured accolades come from our visitors and customers. Some of the most recent are:
