Our splendid Jodhpur exhibition “Peacock in the Desert, The Royal Arts of Jodhpur” received rave reviews around the world, such as these comments by Sebastian Smee, Art Critic, The Washington Post:
"It’s a thoughtful, stately and scholarly exhibition, filled with objects of almost unbelievable refinement…shot through with cosmopolitanism … dense with delights and revelations…"
If you missed it in Houston, Seattle or Toronto, you can still visit with the truly beautiful exhibition catalogue. Order here
On 11 April 2014 Mehrangarh Fort was the venue for the introduction of VAARA, a new scent by the legendary British fragrance house Penhaligon's, inspired by the palace, fort, desert and gardens of Jodhpur, and named after Maharaja Gaj Singh's granddaughter. The glittering function was attended by fashion and fragrance journalists from around the world, with a good sprinkling of celebrities and royalty. VAARA has gone on to become one of Penhaligon's most treasured fragrance lines. See their website, www.penhaligons.com, for the full story.
An amazing exhibition of 17th-19th century paintings from the Royal Jodhpur ateliers travelled to the US, UK, and Australia. It attracted dazzling reviews, such as the excerpts below from Laura Cumming in The Observer, 21 May 2009:
"The most intoxicating show of the year has just opened at the British Museum. Garden and Cosmos begins on Earth and eventually rises to the star-spangled heavens. The first half represents the worldly paradise of three maharajahs...the second half reaches far out into the soul of the universe."
The exclusive products inspired by these extraordinary paintings continue to be among the most popular treasures in the Mehrangarh Museum Shop.
In 2007, TIME magazine included the Fort in their Best of Asia issue
